Trauma Unit Admission

Many patients with traumatic injuries can be safely and effectively managed in their local trauma unit and remain close to their family and friends.

It may be however that a need for MTC care becomes apparent after admission. Clinicians should go back to the start of the pathway for advice on appropriate referral and transfer.

In most cases transfer will be from a TU ward / critical care bed to the MTC ward / critical care bed although there may be circumstances in which transfer to the MTC ED is justifiable - i.e. the patient is unstable and needs reassessment by the full trauma team at the MTC.
