Leeds Major Trauma Centre |
At the Leeds Major Trauma Centre we look after any person who has suffered major trauma within West Yorkshire for adults and Yorkshire and Humberside for children.
Major trauma means to suffer a life changing injury or multiple serious injuries that could result in death or serious disability. These might include for example people who have been in a high speed vehicle crash, industrial accident, high fall, explosion, severe knife or gunshot wounds.
Although these sorts of injuries are actually quite rare, severe major trauma remains the leading cause of death in people under the age of 30 and trauma patients occupy more hospital beds than all patients from heart diseases and four times more than patients with cancer. World Health Organisation (WHO) predicts that trauma will rank third among the causes of disability by 2020 worldwide and has a significant global disease burden.
With patients often suffering complex, multiple injuries that often need surgical and nursing care from multiple specialists and care from many professionals such as physiotherapists, occupational therapists and speech therapists. This care is very important and many patients need a personalised rehabilitation programme taking many months to help them return to an active life.
